There is hardly a film by Aki Kaurismäki that does not touch on working life in one form or another, usually monotonous, often full of privation and sometimes only of short duration. The "Proletariat Trilogy" brings together early works by Kaurismäki, featuring his regular cast: Matti Pellonpää and Kati Outinen.

ARIEL: "Somewhere over the Rainbow" is a long way away for Taisto. Driving his father's broken-down Cadillac, he meets Irmeli, a traffic cop, loses his inheritance and ends up in prison. Plans can be made here - once again with his cellmate Matti Pellonpää - to escape overseas with Irmeli and her young son. A melodramatic search for happiness unfolds to the sounds of Finnish tango and Baltic pop music.
